If Not For Shoes

If not for shoes,
Your feet would balk,
Resist, refuse
To run or walk
On ice and snow
Or anywhere
Even one toe
Might freeze if bare.
Socks try, although
Feet mostly find
That socks do less
And can’t be shined
Without a mess.
