The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

At the Bottom of my Garden

Have you seen Black Eyed Susie?
Her bear’s breeches are fastened
With bachelor’s buttons.
Wrapped in a blanket flower,
She carries an umbrella plant
To keep her old man’s beard dry.

Have you met Busy Lizzie?
She wears foxgloves and a lady’s mantle
And carries a fairy lantern.
She drinks from a buttercup
As she climbs Jacob’s ladder
With her angel’s fishing rod.

Have you heard the Snap Dragon
Breathe fire with his hound’s tongue
Listening with his cat’s ears?
In his lobster claws
He carries blue bottles and bear grass
And cries baby’s tears.
