Autumn Leaves a Dragon

When chilly winds begin to blow,
I shake the autumn trees
to drop their leaves upon a nest
that’s hidden from the breeze.

A special, luminescent egg
reacts and cracks in two.
Then suddenly a snout peeks out
as scaly claws climb through.

I watch a lizard roll in leaves
which stick upon its spine
becoming wings that glow with heat
as beast and plant combine.

Now, ZIP! an autumn dragon zooms
among the grateful trees.
His bursts of warmth protect my yard
from winter’s frosty freeze.
