Here’s to Starlings
Here’s to starlings, friendly song singing birds
Avian tricksters whose voices are heard
Whistling or raucous – taking their chances,
Perching up high on thin twiggy branches.
Beaks preen plumage, inky iridescence,
Ruffle each feather, all bold effervescence
Oil slick colours, all sprinkled with speckles.
warming nest’s treasure – all calm blue freckles.
Keeping eggs safe through rain dripping weather,
Feed draggled chicks all huddling together.
Seeking out grubs and larvae a-plenty
Until the parents see their nest empty.
Dusk sees them flocking with no consternation
Evening skies blossom with wild murmurations!
Avian tricksters whose voices are heard
Whistling or raucous – taking their chances,
Perching up high on thin twiggy branches.
Beaks preen plumage, inky iridescence,
Ruffle each feather, all bold effervescence
Oil slick colours, all sprinkled with speckles.
warming nest’s treasure – all calm blue freckles.
Keeping eggs safe through rain dripping weather,
Feed draggled chicks all huddling together.
Seeking out grubs and larvae a-plenty
Until the parents see their nest empty.
Dusk sees them flocking with no consternation
Evening skies blossom with wild murmurations!
