The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

If I Had A Big Balloon

Oh! if I had a big balloon
I’d float into the skies
Up there, one sunny afternoon,
Just think how far I’d rise!

Up up up, above the trees
My oh my, what a sight!
High over birds upon the breeze
Looking at them in flight.

I’d drift over the city and town
I’m sure I’d have a ball
And everything as I looked down
Would seem so very small.

As cars and people moved around,
Like busy little ants,
With busy lives upon the ground
Doing their busy dance.

But I would be up there and free
Admiring the views,
I’d watch rivers flow to the sea,
Or whatever I choose.

Above the fields golden and green
And clouds like cotton fluff,
So many wonders to be seen,
Truly astounding stuff.

Yes, what a great thing it would be
To float over these sights
There’s just one thing that’s stopping me –
I’m really scared of heights!
