Our Dog’s Dinner
Meat or fish, it doesn’t matter,
nothing hangs about in our dog’s dish
for long.
It’s there to be eaten as fast as she can
in case the invisible dog in our house
should steal it from under her nose.
(The same invisible dog
that might claim her spot on the settee
should she abandon it for too long.)
So she hardly pauses to take a breath,
no time to savour the flavour
as she wolfs it down.
Then she licks her lips, tongue swiping her face,
the way she eats would be a disgrace
if we were to eat like that.
But gourmet meal or supermarket deal,
it’s all the same
to our dog.
nothing hangs about in our dog’s dish
But gourmet meal or supermarket deal,
it’s all the same
to our dog.
