Rockpooling in August
Racing across the sand,
Over the rocks,
Clambering with buckets and spades,
Kaneesha and Nell find the fairy
Pools again. Peering in, at first they
Only see themselves reflected back, like
Otherworldly mermaids longing to be human girls.
‘Look!’ Nell points, ‘There!’ A blenny buries
Itself at the bottom, and dark red tentacles bloom
Near floating bladderwrack. Kaneesha moves the
Green seaweed, and a tiny shrimp darts
Into a crevice. They traverse the rocky ledges to the
Next shining pool. ‘Can you see a starfish?’ Nell
Asks, but Kaneesha is investigating the white
Underside of a dead shore crab. The
Grey, conical shell of a limpet clings to the side.
Under the water, a fragile world waits for the
Swirling, foaming, rushing, roaring sea
To return. For now, the magic is theirs.
Over the rocks,
Clambering with buckets and spades,
Kaneesha and Nell find the fairy
Pools again. Peering in, at first they
Only see themselves reflected back, like
Otherworldly mermaids longing to be human girls.
‘Look!’ Nell points, ‘There!’ A blenny buries
Itself at the bottom, and dark red tentacles bloom
Near floating bladderwrack. Kaneesha moves the

Underside of a dead shore crab. The

Swirling, foaming, rushing, roaring sea
To return. For now, the magic is theirs.
