Seahorse Ride

Little fingers wrapped around a wooden seahorse toy.
They galloped all about the house, the seahorse and his boy.

And to the horse, the boy whispered his special secret wish.
“I want to swim with seahorses and manatees and fish!”

And suddenly the boy transported to a cozy seagrass bed.
He was small as a young mollusk. A Stetson graced his head.

He rode upon a seahorse back, steadied by a saddle.
They dodged a shark, an octopus, an old canoer’s paddle.

To the coral reefs they trotted. (Reefs have far fewer monsters)
They met a four-armed starfish, then a sea sponge, a blue lobster!

They’d seen the wonders of the ocean, but changing was the tide,
Seahorse cantered to the surface as the boy waved a goodbye.

At home the pair curled up in bed, the boy whispered again,
“I’ll never forget our time at sea, my seahorse toy and me.”
