The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

Step One

Let’s close our eyes and imagine
A future so shining and bright.
What do you see?
What a world it might be,
Filled with wonders, abundance, and light!

We embrace all humanity joyfully,
As a family where we all belong.
No more warfare, or hate,
We can just celebrate
That our differences do make us strong.

We have ended displacement and hunger,
There is food and safe housing for all.
Laws and science ensure
Every life is secure,
There’s no cracks through which people can fall.

We can treat every ailment and illness,
There’s no hurdle to access-to-health.
And when everyone thrives
Living long, pain-free lives,
That’s the true definition of wealth.

We use only renewable energy,
With a grid that is strong and robust.
So as best as we’re able
The climate is stable,
For our children and theirs to entrust.

We no longer make species endangered,
We see ecosystems as a whole.
From the whales to the bees,
The rainforests and seas,
We acknowledge they all play a role.

And with everything here running smoothly,
We have turned our eyes up to the stars.
Our bright, bold pioneers
Brave the final frontiers
With a colony started on Mars!

Now open your eyes, look around you.
See the world as it stands here, today.
Imagining is step one,
Now there’s work to be done,
So together, let’s make it that way!

About the Writer

Erin Zampaglione

Erin spent 10 years as a scientist, running experiments and analyzing data in laboratories. Scientific writing can be very technical, but she always loved writing poetry for school publications, friends, and family. Now she is a full-time mom and first-time children’s writer. She hopes to approach these new roles in the same way a scientist would: by being curious and observant.
