The Dirigible Balloon
Poetry for Children

The Future’s Ours

Dad says the future’s ours to make,
with opportunities to take.
Ignore dream-smashers, Dad insists,
those gloom-predictors, with doom-lists
that get you down or make you fearful.
There’s good reason to be cheerful.

Every generation finds
fresh inspiration from young minds.
Novel things attract attention:
grand ideas for great inventions;
treatment so sick kids live longer;
ways to make our planet stronger.

Some things won’t work out as planned,
but we can choose, as best we can,
to look ahead with faith and hope.
Our future’s a kaleidoscope
to marvel over and create
a world that we can celebrate.

Shielded now from present view,
we’ll shape the future,
me, and you.
