There’s a Strawberry Sandwich in My Future
My favourite things are strawberries
I love to eat them with every meal
avoiding the slugs and snails
and the scraggly caterpillars
we grow the berries in the garden
and pick them all summer long
we’re so lucky to have strawberries
when we’re watching Wimbledon
but when Grandma came for tea
it made her sad and frown to see me
making strawberry sandwiches (and eating
upside down) - she complained when I put
them on my pasta you shouldn’t eat so many
strawberries, it can’t be good for you
you wouldn’t eat them in the winter
or put them on a barbecue... but then
I had a flashback, to when we tried to do -
just that - it didn’t work, so don’t bother trying –
Grandma finally tried a bite and had to admit
it was the most amazing sandwich experience,
like eating a soft and jammy cloud,
it didn’t hurt her teeth one bit - even the crusts
didn’t make her groan too loud, so I’ll be
in the kitchen, making strawberry sandwiches,
wondering if they’ll be so tasty now that I’m allowed ...
I love to eat them with every meal
avoiding the slugs and snails
and the scraggly caterpillars
we grow the berries in the garden
and pick them all summer long
we’re so lucky to have strawberries
when we’re watching Wimbledon
but when Grandma came for tea
